The Very Air We Breathe Matters The Most

Dec 19, 2017

The last decade saw alarming rise of air pollution. The most hazardous among all are rise of particulate matters (pm 2.5 and pm 10) along with chemicals.  Pollution can trigger new cases of asthma, worsen the pre existing respiratory illness and can provoke development of lung cancers.  Among all, it can affect the lung growth of children making them prone to allergies and other respiratory diseases in future.  The effect is more marked in persons already having some respiratory and cardiac problems.

Symptoms get aggravated with exposure particularly in winters when low temperature along with humidity makes the pollutants suspended in air for longer duration. Patients often present with increase in their symptoms despite adherent to usual medication with which they were earlier comfortable. So it is advisable to avoid any outdoor physical exercise particularly in morning when pollutant load is high. Don’t discontinue or alter the dose of medications without consultation with your doctor, get yourself annual flu vaccinations, refrain yourself from smoking and report to your physician in case you are having trouble breathing despite taking the medications.
