Mar 8, 2018

Let’s be thankful to our kidneys as they do the filthiest job as compared to all the other organs in our body and make them feel special on this special day of World Kidney Day. This year the day is being celebrated on 8th March along with International Women’s Day. So, with two major days falling on the same day, it gives us the privilege to reflect the importance of women’s health specifically about their kidney. The theme for this year for the World Kidney Day is Kidney and Women’s Health: Include, Value, Empower.

The main aim of the day is encourage people to opt for early detection and prevention methods for the kidney problems, which can help in reducing the future complications, deaths and disability caused by chronic renal failure.

Kidney problems in India:

In India 4 lakh people are living with chronic kidney disease and only 1% gets it transplanted. According to health experts the number has been doubled up in the past 15 years and if we talk about the present scenario, 17 in every hundred citizens suffer from some or other kind of kidney disorder. Every year 2, 20,000-2, 75,000 new patients requires Renal Replacement Therapy every year in the country.
Not much of significance is given to kidney problems as it still falls under the-radar condition. With the recent increase in the number of patients undergoing for dialysis, there’s an increase by 10-15 per cent every year, which mostly include children. The exact cause for the increasing number of chronic kidney disease in India is still undefined, but the approximate prevalence is nearly about 800 per million people.

People who are at the higher risk of developing kidney disease:
  • Patients who have high blood pressure problem and diabetes are more prone to suffer from kidney problems.
  • Fewer intakes of fluids
  • Excessive smoking
  • Excessive intake of medicines, drugs and salt are some f the major reasons contributing to the increase in kidney disorders.
Mentions below are some tips which can be helpful in the prevention of kidney disease:
  • Regular health checkups
  • Control over hypertension and early detection of it
  • Control over blood sugar level is mandatory in terms to remain away from kidney disease.
  • A health person needs to consume 2-3 liters of water every day, so the urine output is adequate.
  • If a person is already dealing with any kidney disease, then he/she need to consume small quantities of protein and salt.
Women and Chronic Kidney Disease:

Approximately 195 million females are suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease all across the globe and it is 8 leading cause of death in females, with about 600,000 deaths every year.

Women are prone to CKD with 14% prevalence as compared to that of men with 12% prevalence. Although the number of women who are receiving dialysis is lower as compared to that of men. According to a recent research it has been observed that kidney transplantation is unequally spread, majorly because of social, cultural and psychological aspects and women tend to donate more kidneys are they are the only ones who are less likely to receive them.

Hence, considering the facts in the above mentioned paragraph, there is clear need for higher awareness followed by timely diagnosis and proper check up of CKD especially among women. CKD also affect pregnant women as it can lead to premature baby delivery and premature deaths of fetus.

The day not only focus on the diagnosis or early prevention but also encourage maximum number of people about kidney donation and kidney transplant, as it is one of the best way for life saving for those who are living with kidney failure or other chronic kidney diseases.

On this day government implement various new strategies to motivate the donors as well as patients and their family members.

“Anemia and electrolyte imbalance also leads to various kidney diseases, if they are not detected at an appropriate time. Majority of women are dealing with hypertension along urinary tract infection, which is directly responsible for kidney diseases and various heart problems. Blood pressure is known to be a silent killer. It should be treated in the very first go and needs to be monitored regularly, to have healthy functioning of kidneys and heart.”, says Dr. Rajesh Bansal, Senior Consultant – Nephrology.
