- Liver diseases are a prime focus area for the unit and large numbers of patients with acute and chronic liver disease (cirrhosis) due to hepatitis B, C and A and alcohol
- In addition to the management the medical team provides counseling and education to patients with liver disease related to alcohol, hepatic viruses and carriers for hepatitis B
- Management of liver failure and portal hypertention
- Treatment for acute and chronic pancreatitis
- Upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding
- Esophageal disorders such as hiatus hernia, reflux motility disorders, varices

Surgical management of Gastrointestinal & Liver Disease
The surgical services include the performance of specialized and complex GI surgical procedures for the management of diseases of various parts of the GI tract such as:
- Esophageal diseases including achalasia, hiatus hernia and strictures
- Diseases of the liver and Biliary tract, including liver cysts, abscesses, portal hypertension, gallstones, cholecystitis and postcholecystectomy complications, cholangitis, Biliary tract strictures, choledochal cysts, all forms of surgical jaundice and hepatobiliary cancers.
- Complications of diseases of the pancreas including pancreatic necrosis, pancreatic fistulas, pseudocysts, sphincteroplasty, surgery for chronic pancreatitis.
- Diseases of the stomach and alimentary canal including ulcers, bleeds, tuberculosis, intestinal obstruction, fecal fistulas, sphincter-preserving surgery for ulcerative colitis.
- Modern management of cancers such as R-2 resections for stomach cancer, sphincter preserving surgery for rectal cancer, surgery for esophageal, colonic, hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers.
- A special focus area of the unit is surgery in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Even routine surgeries for diseases such as hernia (inguinal, umbilical), bleeding piles, gall bladder stones are refused to these patients by most other centers. At the Metro Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases these surgeries are being routinely done.
Dr. Vivek Tandon, MS, MCh,

Dr. Vivek Tandon trained in Gastrointestinal Surgery and acquired his MCh. degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He then spent one year as Specialist in the divisions of Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the reputed Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. On his return to India he worked at the GI surgery Department of the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in New Delhi. Dr. Tandon has more than a decade of experience and has worked at the most prestigious institutions in the field of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He has presented and published his work at both national and international forums and has published several papers in national and international journals.

Dr. Bedi did his graduation and Post Graduation in General surgery from Delhi University. After completion of his post graduation, he worked as Specialist Registrar in Lok Nayak Hospital. He has experience in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit at Kingston Hospital, NHS, UK. He has also worked in Colorectal unit at Hemel Hempstead, NHS, UK. He did his diploma in Laparoscopic surgery from Strasburg, France. He has many national and international Publications to his credit.
Dr. BN Tandon
MD,FNA, FIAP, FIAPSM, FIPHA
Prof.(Dr.) B.N.Tandon was born on 1st August, 1931. His medical education had been at KGMC, Lucknow, Harvard Medical School, Boston and MIT Cambridge, U.S.A. Prof. B.N.Tandon worked 30 years at A.I.I.M.S as Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit and Dean. He has more than 225 original publications. He is author of 8 monographs and 15 chapters in various text books. He received Padma Bhushan from the President of India in the year 1986, Sasakawa WHO Health Prize in the year 1990 and Jubilee Medal from the Presidium of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in the year 1995. He is fellow of Indian National Science Academy (FNA), National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Indian Academy of Pediatrics (FIAP), Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicines (FIAPSM) and Indian Public Health Association (FIPHA). He had been President of International Association of Liver and Asian Pacific Association of Liver. He was President of Indian Society of Gastroenterology and Nutrition Society of India. He has been Vice President of World Association of Gastroenterology. He is at present Chairperson for Digestive Diseases Foundation of India and Digestive Diseases Research Foundation. He is Chairman of Metro Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases, NOIDA (UP) and Metro Liver and Digestive Diseases Clinic, New Delhi. He has Chairman of Task Force of Liver Diseases at Indian Council of Medical Research. He has been chairman of Integrated Child Development Services (Anganwadi) from 1975 to 1995.
Dr. Anurag Tandon

Dr. Anurag Tandon graduated from the Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and completed his Post Graduation in Internal Medicine from the same institution. He worked at the Liver Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and went on to do his super specialization, D.M. in Gastroenterology from Banaras Hindu University. He has received advanced training in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy at Queen Mary’s Hospital in HongKong. He has also worked at the Liver Unit at King’s College in London and received advanced training in the management of complex liver diseases and liver transplant. He is presently working as Senior Consultant in the Metro Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases at the Metro Multispeciality Hospital in Noida. He has several publications in important scientific journals in the field of liver and digestive diseases. His special areas of interest are Viral Hepatitis, Acute Liver Failure and Portal Hypertension. He has been awarded with the ‘Young Investigator Award’ at the 10th Asian Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology held at Yokohama in Japan. He has presented his papers in several National and International Forums. He has been the Organizing Secretary of many symposia and scientific meetings related to his subject. Presently he is the Secretary of the Digestive Diseases Foundation of India. He has organized health awareness camps for promoting Hepatitis B immunization. He has been actively working to create awareness regarding early detection of liver diseases related to Hepatitis B and C. He has organized Public Forum Meetings to focus attention on Alcohol and life style related liver problems
